The Standale South Trail in the City of Walker starts at Lake Michigan Drive on the east side of Standale and extends to the south and east where it intersects Sunset Hills Avenue at Harmon Park. The 3/4 mile long bike/pedestrian trail follows electrical transmission lines on property owned by Consumers Energy. The trail will mostly be asphalt pavement, except for a 350 foot stretch that crosses a sensitive wetland area. To preserve the wetland, an elevated boardwalk will be constructed. Construction started at the end of March 2004 and is scheduled to be completed by July 4, 2004.

The project is being constructed by Apex Contractors for the City of Walker. The Friends of the Walker Highlands Trail group helped spearhead the project, and with funding from a HUD Community Development Block Grant, the project is becoming a reality. Moore & Bruggink, Inc. prepared construction documents and assisted with negotiations with Consumers Energy for placing the trail on power company property.

Brush and trees cleared for trail construction.

The first helical screw foundation is installed for the boardwalk. This foundation system was selected for its ease of installation in wet areas with minimal impact. The screws consist of a steel shaft with a 12 inch diameter steel plate that is literally screwed into the ground. Most of the helical screws were installed to a depth of 14 feet.

This is as tough as it got. The crane is floating in 4 feet of water on steel mats.

Boardwalk deck construction begins.
Boardwalk decking and posts for railing are installed.
