The Union Street project is an exciting project for the City of Grand Rapids and funding for this project was, in part, a result of the project location in a Renaissance Zone. Additional funding was provided by the Michigan Department of Transportation and the developer. The project is the reclamation of the Hughart Yard, a former railroad yard in a deteriorated area of Grand Rapids, east of US-131. Site improvements included the installation of approximately one mile of mainline and sideline industrial railroad track, the placement of approximately one-half mile of watermain and storm sewer, the construction of stormwater control ponds and a stormwater lift station to support approximately 500,000 square foot industrial buildings and associated parking lots and driveways. The project also included the installation of four new and the relocation of one signalized railroad crossings. An additional component of the project was the construction of Wallen Street and the reconstruction of Graham Street and associated railroad crossings. |
