Monroe Center, Grand Rapids – This $15.0 million dollar project involved the design and reconstruction of a downtown pedestrian mall into a street and a City park. The project was constructed in two phases. Phase I was completed in 1997 and Phase II was completed in 2001.

The design elements for Phase I provided for an improved and flexible pedestrian gathering place as well as opened Monroe Center to one-way traffic and short term parking. The project included the installation of a snowmelt system in the sidewalks and street, underground telecommunications ducts ("smart street"), filling of areaways, reconstruction of the street and sidewalks with brick surfaces, streetscape beautification, lighting, and utility repair and replacement.

Phase II included the same street elements as Phase I with significant focus on a new City park. The park was designed by implementing visions and concepts from the Artist, Maya Lin. The park includes an ice rink, surrounded by terraces and grass mounds. Pathways connect the stage and restroom buildings with two fountains and the adjacent streets.

This project has been described by the City of Grand Rapids as "a project that exemplifies the dynamic growth and revitalization of Downtown Grand Rapids".
