This multi-faceted project provided a major extension
to the Kent Trails system along the Grand River and Buck Creek in
Grandville. It included overlay of 2.4 miles of existing roadway being
converted to trail, the addition of 1.4 miles of new 12' bituminous trail,
two 30' long concrete boardwalk bridges and a 75' long prefabricated
galvanized steel bridge. Two paved parking lot staging areas and amenities
such as benches and picnic tables rounded out this project funded by an
MDNR Trust Fund grant. Engineering challenges included designing a
prefabricated bridge to allow its complete submergence during high Grand
River stages and placing that bridge in a limited access area. The
project's proximity to extensive wetland areas also posed MDEQ
environmental permitting issues that were met to provide a successful
completion to this new recreational asset in the Greater Grand Rapids
area. The project cost was $686,000. |
