The new David D.
Hunting YMCA in downtown Grand Rapids is the first LEEDs certified YMCA in
the country. The 159,000 sq ft building features a pool, track, basketball
courts, offices and weight rooms, designed with sustainable strategies.
Moore & Bruggink was responsible for the site related sustainable
strategies including native drought tolerant plants requiring no
irrigation, extra trees planted in and around the parking lot to reduce
heat island effects, preferred parking for carpooling and bioswales to
help treat the storm runoff prior to entering the city storm sewer system.
This project won the Environmental Design + Construction 2006 Excellence
in Design Award in the Institutional category and was shown on the
magazine's August 2006 cover. The Marywood Center is an 80,000 sq ft
senior resident center with 51 units for retired sisters with assisted
living, skilled care and dementia care components. The site was designed
by Moore & Bruggink using a natural progressive stormwater management
system, native plantings, and balanced earthwork to minimize site
disturbance. The native plantings include drought tolerant plants and
wildflowers in a natural meadow and prairie area which replaced the
manicured lawn area. The three level residence was built into the hillside
to reduce the buildings impact on the neighborhood. The project was
designed to meet LEEDSs Silver Criteria and has won several awards
including the Environmental Design + Construction 2006 Excellence in
Design Award and the project was on the September 2006 magazine cover.
